Tracy Marie Kroh was born on April 15, 1972, in Pennsylvania. A bright, petite, and talented young woman, Tracy was just 17 years old when her life suddenly and tragically changed.
On August 5, 1989, Tracy was last seen in Halifax, Pennsylvania, after she went to drop off a grill and coupons for her sister and brother-in-law, only to find no one home. That evening marks the last time anyone saw her. When she did not return home, her family’s concern quickly grew — but it wasn’t until days later that authorities were notified.
Throughout the following months and years, the community rallied to find her. On December 19, 1989, a company joined the search for the missing girl, and by January 5, 1990, signs were erected throughout Pottsville, Pennsylvania, to help locate Tracy.
Despite dedicated efforts, by June 19, 1990, police had reached a dead end in their investigation. Yet hope was not lost.
In December 1993, new developments reignited the search: a farmer found some of Tracy’s belongings near Wiconisco Creek, although her body was never recovered. Authorities intensified their focus on Upper Dauphin, with multiple search parties combing the area throughout early December 1993.
Reports surfaced of possible sightings, including a lead in Texas in May 1994, although Tracy’s parents questioned some of these sightings, holding onto hope but remaining cautious.
Over the years, the community marked milestones of remembrance: in August 1998, it was noted Tracy had been gone for 9 years; a year later, in August 1999, family members vowed to never give up the search.
In September 2000, yellow ribbons appeared as symbols of hope and solidarity, marking 11 years since Tracy disappeared.
Years later, in December 2008, police used billboards to revive interest in the cold case, followed by the 20th anniversary in August 2009, which again brought public attention to the unresolved mystery.
Authorities continued their efforts into the 2010s, with new leads announced in August 2014, and ongoing searches through 2019, marking 30 years since Tracy’s disappearance.
In August 2019, a Halifax man was charged in connection with the case, and by December 2019, police reported progress, although a resolution was still elusive.
Legal developments continued into 2020, when a woman involved in the case received jail time for lying about phone conversations in grand jury testimony.
Most recently, in May 2022, police publicly named a suspect, but he is unlikely to ever stand trial.
As of August 9, 2024, Tracy Marie Kroh remains missing. Her body has never been found, and the full truth behind her disappearance remains a painful mystery.
